BARBARESCO

Barbaresco, alongside Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico are the greatest wine regions in Italy. Barolo and Barbaresco wines in Piedmont offer specific cru wines like Burgundy. However unlike Burgundy, Piedmont does little to promote itself. As a consequence, learning about Barbaresco is not easy and requires a wine lover to visit the region and learn about these kinds of wine firsthand. The following producers represent a great introduction to the stalwarts, the rising stars and the undiscovered gems of Barbaresco. Sottimano, Marchesi del Gresy, Produttori del Barbaresco, Cantina Del Pino, Roagna
The tour, minimum of 2-days, starts with a visit to the Sottimano winery in Nieve; their work on the vineyards is exemplary. The cellar looks to raise the terroirs’s profile, as its decision to produce four Barbarescos from single different crus like Fausoni, Pajorè, Cottà, Currà.

After Neive we move to the village of Barbaresco to visit Tenuta Marchesi del Gresy, famous for their monopole cru called Martinenga. From this cru are selected two vineyards: Camp Gros and Gaiun. Camp Gros is next to Rabaja and Gaiun is next to Asili that are two of the most famous grand cru vineyards of Barbaresco. The view from the property is breathtaking and is reason enough to visit this famous property. The tour continues with the visit of the vineyards, after that, Gregory, the colorful wine cellar master (originally came from New Zealand), leads us on a special tasting of their wines.
Barbaresco is the hometown of the “Enoteca Regionale” wine shop built inside to a former 19th century church. Before having lunch at the “Trattoria Antica Torre” restaurant, we will stop at this special Enoteca.
Close to the restaurant is the famous Produttori del Barbaresco winery that we will visit after lunch. Produttori is a cooperative composed by 52 members: they have to respect its rigid rules for working the vineyards to be accepted as part of the cooperative. Nine crus are vinified in purity. The visit will take place at the new winery and Luca will lead us through a tasting of their Barbaresco and Langhe Nebbiolo wines.
In the afternoon we move to Cantina del Pino. Until 1997 Renato Vacca sold his grapes to Produttori. But since leaving the cooperative, he makes some of the most compelling wines in all Barbaresco area. The Barbaresco Ovello is one of my favorite wines, from one of the cooler regions in Barbaresco.
At the end of the day we will visit Roagna. Along with Andrea Sottimano and Renato Vacca, Luca Roagna is one of the young rising stars in Barbaresco. The Crichet Paje is the most famous wine, only produced in the best years. Roagna is a rising star and all his wines are immaculate and speak for themselves.

Barolo, alongside Barbaresco, Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico are the greatest wine regions in Italy. Barolo and Barbaresco wines in Piedmont offer specific cru wines like Burgundy. However unlike Burgundy, Piedmont does little to promote itself. As a consequence, learning about Barolo is not easy and requires a wine lover to visit the region and learn about these kinds of wine firsthand. . The following producers represent a great introduction to the stalwarts, the rising stars and the undiscovered gems of Barolo. Bartolo Mascarello, E. Pira & Figli – Chiara Boschis, Giuseppe Rinaldi, Brovia, Cavallotto Fratelli

The tour, minimum of 2-days, starts in the center of Barolo village at little Bartolo Mascarello winery. Bartolo was the big patriarch of Barolo. The young winemakers used to go to Bartolo for pieces of advice and support for their new projects. His Barolo was never ‘trendy’ as he was a traditionalist for philosophy and certainty. Today his daughter Maria Teresa coherently continues the job with passion and respect leaving the trends aside. Alan (originally from Switzerland) will take us to tour this small winery and through tastings of all their wines.
Next stop will be at E. Pira & Figli – Chiara Boschis winery. Chiara is all about enthusiasm and determination. She started twenty years ago when she decided to be one of the ‘first women in wine’, working together with her brothers Giorgio and Cesare at Borgogno, the historical family winery. Today her wines join tradition and modernity in a frame of elegance and harmony linked to the territory. Her wines are approachable when young. Chiara will lead the tour into the winery followed by the tastings.
After lunch we will go to meet Giuseppe Rinaldi – the authentic soul of the Langa! Giuseppe is a living legend. He is not only one of the most famous producers in Barolo and an extreme traditionalist but also an authentic personality, a real artisan who produce top level wines. Indifferently, both to trends and marketing, he follows only his inspiration and personal taste. Barolos here come from long maceration and patient ageing in big barrels, followed by reasoned blend of grapes from different vineyards. Occasionally Giuseppe leads the tour but more often it is his daughter Marta who takes care of tourists.
Leaving the town of Barolo we stop at Castiglione Falletto, another small village for production of Barolo where we will visit Giacinto Brovia winery. For years Giacinto gave to wine enthusiasts the most profound, refined and characteristic wines of Langhe. His Villero and Rocche are wines of big depth, slow to open and exciting. Today his daughters Cristina and Elena follow their father’s footsteps. The wines show clearly the signature of territory due to the meticulous clean and impeccable management of vineyards.
The last winery of the day tour will be at Cavallotto Brothers, where Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura, now manage the operations. They are lucky to own the beautiful monopoly of Bricco Boschis, one of the most beautiful Crus of Barolo. The style of their wines is traditional, artisanal and discrete. Their respect for the terroir brings a classical signature of Langhe to the glass.
